A série mostra a vida do Superman quando ele ainda era apenas um adolescente, que nem imaginava os poderes que tinha. Ao invés de lidar com vilões e proteger o mundo, Clark Kent (Tom Welling) terá que enfrentar a escola, as dificuldades de se conquistar as garotas e lidar com seus rígidos, porém amáveis, pais (John Schneider e Annette O'Toole), enquanto seu corpo passa por muitas mudanças e nem todas elas relacionadas à puberdade: uma super-força, visão de raio-x... "É uma puberdade com superpoderes", diz Gough. "Os pais de Clark se perguntam: Será que ele vai ter uma vida normal e será que ele poderá transar? Isso nunca foi diretamente explorado antes". "O coração da série é fazer Clark ser vulnerável", explica Millar, que diz que teve a aprovaçãoo da DC Comics para tomar toda a liberdade com a história. "Nós não queríamos fazer um Superboy, então por isso é que nós tiramos o paletó, a capa e o fato dele poder voar. Nós queríamos ver ele como uma pessoa real. É algo chato ser o Superman". Mais forte e mais rápido do que qualquer outra pessoa, Clark não consegue entender porque se sente tão deslocado, principalmente na presença da bela Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk), cujos pais foram mortos da chuva de meteoros que o trouxe à Terra. E numa grande diferença em relação às outras histórias, Clark se torna amigo de seu futuro inimigo, Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum), após se encontrarem por acaso. Enquanto eles aguardam pela (grande) mudança em seus destinos, Smallville nunca mais será a mesma.
